Four laboratories are involved in this multidisciplinary study: the Conchological Laboratory of Normandie (LCN), the Invertebrates Physiology Laboratory (LPI), the Université Bretagne Occidentale (LEMAR IHP) and the Conchological Laboratory of Poitou-Charentes (LCPC). The part of the study which is presented here (thematics "Coastal ecology") was produced in collaboration with the LCN. The data on the Bay of Veys was collected by Michel Ropert. This study aims at observing the "sites" effect on mortality and on the general biology of the animal, as well as measuring some environmental elements (e.g. water temperature, etc.). The geographical sites are Gefosse in the Bay of Veys (East Cotentin) and the Ronce bank in the south of the Marennes Oléron Bay. The... |

The objectives for 2004: - Continuation of the study of the "on-bottom/off-bottom" mortality south of the Marennes Oléron Bay with a study of acute stress (sequel to Dynamo & DynamoR studies) (WP 2.2.8). - Continuation of the laboratory analysis of the dynamoR 2003 samples (biological material) and data (WP 2.2.3). - Analysis of the data on the characterisation of summer mortality (WP 2.2.1) in relation to the environment. Through these tasks, the objectives are: (1) understanding the "on-bottom/off-bottom" mortality model of C. gigas in the Marennes Oléron Bay and underlining the environmental causes of summer mortality, (2) bringing a regional answer to this issue, (3) widening the study of the mortality / environment relationship to all the French... |

2001 shows how important the "R" and "S" biological families are for experimentation as well as the need to "preserve" these families from mortality during the first year. The "experimental nursing" conditions do not allow the conservation of dozens of families with many members for 6 to 8 months. Precocious characterisation at around 4-5 months enables a first selection of the biological material, as well as a first answer to the "in lab" genetical selection of the families. After the first results in 2001 (Céline de Ambroggi, LCPC, L. Degremont), two "precocious characterisation of mortality" experiments are carried out in 2002 on the divergent lineage of some genetical families (LGP production). Two 15 day long experiments are conducted in la Tremblade... |

Since 1988, seasonal, chronic mortality (up to 30-40 %) has been occurring at oyster farms in the Marennes-Oléron Bay, namely at the Ronce and Perquis sand flats. The particular geographic position on the southern part of the bay, between the Seudre River and the Maumusson Strait, confers a relative specificity to these oyster farming areas. Production in this area is on the order of 8,000 to 10,000 t of the 30,000 t of oysters produced annually in the Bay. Although limited in surface area (180 ha out of a total of 4,500 ha), this high proportion of production can be attributed to the fact that this zone is mostly dedicated to the finishing process before commercialisation. Due to its economic importance, oyster farming is vital for local businesses. |

Mass mortality outbreaks (90-100%) in both juvenile and adult blue mussels were reported in 2014 along the Pertuis Charentais area of the French Atlantic coast. A series of studies were carried out to learn more about the phenomenon through detecting pathogens, describing environmental conditions and establishing the physiological status of the animals. Bacteria identif ied as belonging to the V. splendidus species were detected in dying mussels and seem able to cause mortality in blue mussels in the laboratory. Unusual environmental conditions (large amounts of fresh water, re-suspension of sediments during a series of storms, and a high renewal rate of specific water masses in Brittany’s Pertuis area) may be partially responsible for sparking the phenomen |

The Shellfish Laboratory of Normandy (LCN : Laboratoire Conchylicole de Normandie) observed unusual hydrologic anomalies associated with important oyster mortalities during the winter of 1999. These anomalies were described as sudden salinity variations during the lidal cycle, particularly on the rising tide. Starting in 1996 a multi-parameter probe was used to monitor salinity, temperature and depth every 10 to 20 minutes in the inter-tidal zone. Alter data processing and filtering, two criteria concerning low salinity were chosen : amplitude and duration. Application of a cumulative function (Ibanez et al., 1993) to this time series data treatment showed the 3 year trend (1996-1999). Salinity variation data and climatic data were used in a multivariate... |

Massive abnormal mortalities of flat oysters Crassostrea during the summer period are nothing new, and such episodes have been described in scientific literature for about forty years. Numerous studies demonstrate that there is not one single identified cause to this phenomenon and that it is, on the contrary, a combination of different parameters. This program proposes a multidisciplinary approach to the problem of summer mortality of C. gigas in which the working hypothesis is that these mortalities result from the interaction of three parameters: environment, host and pathogens. As a consequence, this program gathers all the necessary competences for the study of these interactions: competences in genetics, physiology, immunology, ecotoxicology,... |

Among the major epizootics known in marine Molluscs, the one that started on the coasts of Europe in 1970 in the Portuguese oyster, Crassostrea angulata, was certainly one of the largest due to its range and due to the economic loss sustained by the French oyster farming as a whole. It led to the disappearance of the species C. angulata as a farmed oyster, and to the massive introduction of the Japanese oyster, C. gigas, known to be resistant to the disease. From the first manifestations of this epizootic, the laboratories of the ISTPM were actively dedicated to its etiology. Now, after several years, a study begun at the La Tremblade laboratory has just been completed. |
